There are many opportunities to volunteer at the Cridge
Centre for the Family, and they are all interesting and fulfilling!
There are about a hundred people who give their time and talents through
volunteering at the Centre. Here are some examples of the kinds of
volunteering opportunities that exist, and the ways you can find out
more. (A Volunteer Application form can be found here.)
Please note that all volunteers must agree to a criminal record check
before being eligible for volunteering at the Cridge Centre.
Child Care:
Our
child care services care for children from birth to twelve years
of age. Volunteers are always needed in every age group. Would you
like to cuddle a six-month old baby after nap time? Perhaps you
would prefer to romp in the park with some seven-year olds after
school! Or does the idea of reading a story to a group of wide-eyed
kindergarten children appeal to you? To be considered for these
and many other unique ways to help, please email Geoff Sing at gsing@cridge.org.
Services for women
escaping relationship violence:
Volunteers warm the heart of Hill House! They drive women to appointments,
take them apartment hunting, spend time with children letting them
know they are valued and cared about, fill the house with delicious
smells of baking, and help out with dozens of other tasks and errands.
We ask that our volunteers commit to a 4-hour shift once per week
(days and times are entirely negotiable). Because of the extensive
training provided at no cost to participants, we also ask that volunteers
commit to doing a minimum of 96 volunteer hours (that works out
to be one shift per week for six months). Hill House is a 24 hour,
7 day a week operation, so possible volunteer shifts can be any
time between 8:30 am and 10:00 pm.
Contact Anita at 250-479-3963 for an interview and for the dates
of the next training sessions.
We are
just starting a volunteer component to the Dovetail Programs so
this is your chance to be one of the groundbreaking volunteers!
We need help with driving women to appointments, child-minding groups
and counselling appointments, bagging the donated bread and doughnuts
that arrive daily, and the list grows!
Dovetail Programs volunteer shifts are needed weekdays between
9:00 am and 3 pm.
Contact Anita at 250-479-3963 for an interview and for the dates
of the next training sessions. Volunteer training for the Dovetail
Programs will be included in the Hill House training.
Services for adults
with disabilities:
At Macdonald House, the residents are people who have become disabled
as a result of a brain injury. Volunteers are recruited to provide
leisure support on a one to one basis (ie. going for walks, riding
our tandem bicycle, working on the computer or socializing) and
to assist on group outings (ie. going for coffee, watching a sporting
event, touring the inner harbour or attending any special activity
in the Greater Victoria region). Volunteer opportunities are flexible
around a volunteer’s interests and schedule.
You can learn more by phoning Geoff Sing at (250) 479-5299 or
email gsing@cridge.org.
The
University of Victoria men's rowing team volunteers one Sunday a
year to help with gardening maintenace and preparation at Macdonald
House.
Seniors Centre:
The Cridge Village Seniors Centre is home to 85 seniors receiving
assisted living services. Volunteers are always wanted to offer
interesting talks, music, exercise, arts & crafts, discussion
groups - To offer your talents and gifts, please contact the Activity
Department Staff at activitydept@cridge.org
or call 220-2303 – and talk to Marcia.
